Bryson Wins All Ireland Veterans Championship
All Ireland Veterans Championships on Saturday 25th June 2005
Robbie Bryson (Lakeland CC) showed his true class when he won today’s All Ireland Veteran’s Road Race Championship at Dundrod. The Enniskillen based fireman hasn’t raced in recent years and only competed in four events this season but he still managed to claim the champions jersey from one of the strongest ever fields for a veterans National Championship.
Bryson was part of a large break which developed early in the race but when the course switched on to the Deer’ Leap section for the last three laps this group was whittled down to three – Bryson, Shaun Gray (Orchard Wheelers) and Brendan Graham (Planet X). Both Graham and Gray finished on the podium last year, albeit in the silver and bronze positions, and were eager to clinch gold.
However Bryson, who has represented Ireland in the World Fell Running Championships, attacked jut after the final climb and crossed the line 12 second ahead of Gray with Graham a further 11 seconds down.
Last year’s victor Lennie Kirk (Slane Cycles), who had been to the fore of the action all day, was next home while Gordon Scott (Kings Moss) and Leslie O’Donnell (Carrick Wheelers) led home the remainder of the field to complete the top six.
The team medals were won by the Tipperary based Carrick Wheelers- Dan Morrissey club comprising Leslie O’Donnell, Maurice Hartory and Sean McIlroy.
