A 'Dun' Deal For Dane
Road Race 1 on Wednesday 7th April 2010
The first road race in the Lakeland cycling club season sponsored by Lakeland Bikes, brought out a large group of 42 riders to the three way inn on the Sligo road Enniskillen, the race then traveled towards Swanlinbar, Kinawley, Derrylin, Belnaleck and finished in Arney
The race was handicapped into 3 groups, with the scratch group consisting of only two riders, Raymond and Dane Dunlop, who are in fantastic form.
The Front group got off to a good start with James Johnston and Julie Mulligan working hard to keep the groups apart, but with John McManus, Neil Armstrong and Raymond Pauley giving it there all to close the front group down and keep the Dunlop’s at a distance, and for there effort they caught the front group and swallowed them up.
The race was kept at a very high pace with a lot of riders struggling to stay in the bunch, however this did not stop the two Dunlop’s catching the group before Derrylin and immediately launching an attack which was quickly pulled in by the Omagh riders, but with the pace being kept high with the peloton
strung out Dane Dunlop seen his chance and made a break for it, opening up a bit of a gap with Neil Armstrong and the ever improving John McManus helping him to open up a gap, Raymond Dunlop followed showing his strength and determination in being fit to ride over from the peloton to the break without the help of any other riders.
The break stayed away to the finish, with the Omagh riders trying with all there heart to try and close down the gap, but to little avail. Dane took the break away sprint closely followed by Raymond Dunlop, Neil Armstrong and John McManus, which was followed closely by the peloton bunch sprint, which started a little early with the very keen Raymond Pauley and Mark Kavanagh getting a little to anxious and going to soon, this resulted in Declan McGirr picking up the sprint, with youth rider Lloyd Seaman finishing well up in the bunch sprint.
In the build up to the sprint there was a serious accident and all at the Lakeland Cycling club would like to wish Kenny Donnell and Sean Fee a speedy recovery and a thank you to anyone that helped out on the night, especially the first aiders.
