Another Win For Dane In Last Road Race Of The Season

Mass Start RR on Wednesday 19th August 2009

The last road race of the season brings with it a mass start, which no rider receives a handicap.

This is one of the harder races of the season when the weaker rider, the youth, the old and beginners all have to try to remain in the group to the finish line.

Twenty cyclists lined up for the challenge all hoping to stay with the big boys.

The race started at the Three Way Inn on Sligo road on route to Swanlinbar, Kinawley, Derrylin, Belnaleck and finished in Arney. As the long nights approach the races are reduced in length to 23 miles.

The race remained together for the first five miles until our two visiting Fintona riders slipped off the front of the bunch namely Declan and Fergus McGirr.

They were quickly pulled back into the group by the Lakeland men.

Approaching Kinawley, the next attack came from the Dunlop cousins, Ray and Dane, with Fergus McGirr and Kenny Boylan in hot pursuit, who managed to bridge the gap to the two leaders.

The four opened up a considerable gap over the main peloton on route to Belnaleck, here the craft of the peloton lead by Pauley took the advantage of drafting behind a passing lorry with speeds of up to 40 MPH, they quickly reeled back in the breakaway group.

Before Belnaleck the Dunlop cousins made their final attack which they held to the finish line in Arney.

Dane taking the sprint from Raymond by half a wheel. Pauley lead in the Peloton to take 3rd place.

Congratulations to our youth Lloyd Seaman and James Stephens for their fighting spirit to remain in the Peloton also our beginners namely Raymond Kerr, Gerry Kinston and Alex McElroy for taking on the challenge of an open race when our riders are at their peak.

Again thanks to our lady marshals and Antony McGirr our lead vehicle driver for keeping cycling road racing safe through the year.

The club will be sending a strong team this weekend to the All Ireland hill climb Championships which will be held over the gap of Mamore in Co Donegal.

The team comprises of Raymond Dunlop, Dane Dunlop, Kenny Boylan and Robbie Bryson.

Hopefully Robbie has recovered from his trip to Canada where he took part in the World Police and Fire fighter Games.

The club is hoping that the colours of the team medals will be Gold. Good luck to the team from all Lakeland Cycle Club members.
