Boylan Edged Out In Sprint
Road Race 4 on Wednesday 10th June 2009
The Pauley Cable road race league number four held on Wednesday 10th June, was well supported by riders from Lakeland, Omagh and Fintona. The riders were placed in three groups of ability, the first group having a five minutes handicap over the scratch group.
Brendan Fee of the home Lakeland C.C. who had completed in the Wicklow 200 the previous weekend set the pace for the front group along with help from Marius Leonard Lakeland CC.
Eugene Power from Omagh was main pacemaker in the middle group; he made the riders suffer up the Grann Brae and on route to Boho and the Devils S.
The scratch group consisted of three riders each from the Omagh Wheelers and the Lakeland Club, missing from the scratch this week were Raymond and Dane Dunlop, they were resting for the Ulster 10 mile Time Trial Championships on the following night at Woodgreen outside Antrim. Dane who won the Time Trial at the Donegal three day is hoping for a top 10 finish.
All the groups came together on the road home from Belcoo. Robbie Bryson (Lakeland C.C) made several attempts to break free from the main peleton. Omagh riders controlled the race from the front and all breaks were quickly pulled back. It was that old man Kenny Boylan who eventually made the break with Wesley Foster (Lakeland CC) and Mark Sweeney (Omagh Wheelers) firmly pasted on his rear wheel.
The Lakeland and Omagh riders were happy not to work in the peleton, the chase group was then drilled by the Fintona riders but all was not in vain as Boylan"s group made it to the line with eight seconds to spare.
Mark Sweeny from Omagh took the sprint from Boylan with Foster in third place. The chase group was led home by John Paul Connelly Omagh C.C. for the fourth place. Thanks again to the marshals, with their help; the riders do not have fear of going off course and getting lost.
