Dane Secures Road Race Title
Road Race 7 on Wednesday 22nd August 2007
Road Race 7 took place on Wednesday 22nd August. The 24 mile race went from The Three Ways Inn out the Swanlinbar road. At Mullen mart it turned left to Kinawley where it turned right towards Derrylin. When it came to the junction near Derrylin it went left back through Belanaleck to the finish at Enniskillen.
In this race everyone was started all together and not split into groups. This made it a good race for breakaways. Robbie Bryson, Neil Armstrong and Ian Caldwell were in the first breakaway before the Mullen mart junction. This break was closed down but two of the riders, Robbie and Ian joined with Michael Holland, Dane and Raymond Dunlop in another breakaway. Kenny Boylan led Willie Dunlop and Peter Martin in a charge to catch the breakaway which they did by the junction at Derrylin. This lead group of eight riders then stayed together watching and waiting for someone to make a move and in doing so were nearly caught by the peloton. Kenny Boylan and Raymond Dunlop then stepped the pace up to pull away again. As this group came near the finish the pace got high with riders trying to get away. In the final sprint Peter Martin just edged Dane out to claim first, a reverse of the 1-2 in the same race at the start of the season. Ian Caldwell came in third in his last race with Lakeland, for a year anyway, as he leaves shortly for a year in Australia. He will enjoy better weather for his winter training down under with Cadel Evans and Robbie McEwen. If he doesn’t get an offer from an Australian cycle team he will hopefully be back in Lakeland colours again stronger than ever.
This race decided the final places in the Road Race League. Despite Peter Martin’s race win he could not knock Dane Dunlop off top spot in the league. Thanks as always to the marshals. The last event of the year, the McCaffrey’s Cross Time Trial, is all that is left and will decide the two remaining leagues.
