Second Club Title In A Row For Lakeland
Inter-Club 5 (Lakeland) on Wednesday 8th August 2007
The final Inter-club race of the season took place on Wednesday, August 8 with the 28 mile race starting in Fivemiletown before heading out the Fintona road to Murley cross where it went left to Clabby and left again at Clabby back to Fivemiletown. Three laps of this circuit were completed and then it was out the Fintona road, straight at Murley cross and on up the hill to the finish at the windmills.
A good result in this race would confirm Lakeland CC as winners of the Interclub League contested between East Tyrone, Emyvale, Fintona and Omagh cycle clubs. The field was split into three groups according to ability. Lakeland had a new rider making his debut, Lee Johnston. The eighteen year old is more used to his professional 1000cc Suzuki motorbike than a racing bicycle and has only been riding for a few weeks.
The front group worked well and kept ahead until the start of the climb up to the windmills. The scratch group caught the middle group on the second lap and they stayed together to catch the front group on the climb.
On the climb. the Lakeland scratch riders attacked with Emyvale’s Paul Brady and Omagh’s J P Connolly the only other contenders.
As the climb progressed Robbie Bryson, Raymond Dunlop and Kenny Boylan dropped Paul Brady and J P Connolly.
In the race for the line Raymond just edged it from Kenny with Robbie coming in third. Paul Brady just managed to hold off Dane Dunlop to claim fourth and push Dane into fifth.
The race wasn’t over just yet though as in a last desperate burst for the line, new boy, Lee Johnston ducked in ahead of J P Connolly to take sixth. Neil Armstrong completed the rout coming in eighth. Lakeland needed a result and what a result, a 1-2-3 and six riders in the top eight.
This result secures the Interclub League for a second year in a row for Lakeland CC. With promising new talent like Lee Johnston and Glen McCleery coming in to add to the experienced riders it all looks good for next year and three in a row!
