Robbie Bryson Wins At Garvary
Road Race 6 on Wednesday 1st August 2007
18 riders assembled at Garvary Church on Wednesday, August 1 for the 28 mile Road Race Six in the Lakeland CC calendar. The race started at Garvary church went to Tempo then turned left up the hill towards Kilskeery. At the ‘Fingerpost’ it went left on through Coa and turned left up past Ballydoolagh Lough back to Garvary Church where it started again, two laps of this circuit finishing just before Garvary cross.
This is quite a tough, hilly race so the field was split into four groups which were started at intervals according to their ability.
The third group of lean, mean, climbing machines had caught the front two groups on the hill out of Tempo on the second lap with the fans lining the hillside, well okay there was one small group of onlookers at the top of the hill, though they are bigger fans of 18 wheelers than two wheelers.
With John McManus and Neil Armstrong in this third group, their confidence high after their one-two in the previous night’s Omagh Wheelers race, it looked like this group would not be caught by the scratch group of Kenny Boylan, Robbie Bryson and Dane Dunlop.
But as the peloton passed Ballydoolagh Lough, a mile from the finish, Robbie and Kenny caught them. Robbie went to the front and stepped the pace up. Then he stepped it up another gear to just ride off the front and, just like the man who invented the rear view mirror, he never looked back after that, going on to win comfortably. Peter Martin finished second with Ian Caldwell third. One rider retired and one rider was lost, presumed having a better time.
