McGirr Wins

Road Race 4 on Wednesday 6th June 2007

On Wednesday 6th June the fourth road race in the Lakeland CC calendar took place. Eighteen riders showed for the 25 mile event. Starting at the oil depot at Silverhill and going out the Derrygonnelly road before turning left for Boho. After descending from Boho and coming out onto the Belcoo road they headed back towards Enniskillen before turning left to finish at Rossorry Church.

The field was set off in three groups as usual. The middle group worked well together and caught the front group on the Belcoo road. Most of the middle group took their turn at the front keeping the pace up to stay ahead of the ‘scratch’ group which they did.

Mark McGirr was making a comeback after a few injuries. He spent a lot of time recovering at the back of the peloton and by the end of the race he was so well recovered that he was fit to out sprint the rest of the peloton to win the race. We have come to expect this sort of tactics from Tommy Peoples but not from a Lakeland rider. Raymond Pauley came in second with Ian Caldwell third.
