Neil Gets His First Win

Inter-Club 2 (Omagh) on Tuesday 22nd May 2007

Tuesday, May 22 saw the second inter-club race of the season, this one organised by the Omagh Wheelers cycle club. The 32 mile race covered some very hilly terrain with the finish line at the top of the last climb out of Gortin.

Kenny Dunlop and Neil Armstrong started the race in the front group with the other Lakeland riders in the second and ‘scratch’ groups.

As they began the last climb, the front group still had not been caught. On the hill a group of riders made a break which Neil Armstrong kept close tabs on.

Then a solo Omagh Wheeler jumped off the group. Again Neil closed him down and this time went on past him up the hill. Neil wasn’t sure of the finish line so rode conservatively to save something for the sprint. When he saw the 200 metres to the line mark on the road, the Omagh Wheeler was just catching him up. The Omagh rider probably thought he had the race but he didn’t realise that Armstrong was messing with his mind. When the Omagh man made his burst for the line Neil just told himself ‘no sir, this is my day’ and out-sprinted him to get his first win, an inter club one at that.

The peleton was just catching up as Neil crossed the line and Raymond Dunlop and Robbie Bryson claimed third and fourth places respectively. A number of other Lakeland riders finished in the top ten to make it a great result for Lakeland CC.
