The Race Of Truth (Part 1)

Time Trial 1 on Wednesday 4th April 2007

On Wednesday 4th April the first official Lakeland Cycling Club time trial of the year took place. The 10 mile event started at the 5 Points went 5 miles towards Gortatole and then returned. There was a good turnout for the event with 22 riders. The riders were set off at one minute intervals as usual. Weather conditions were very good for time trialling. A lot of new technology was on show so most had no excuses for not performing.

Raymond Dunlop continued where he left off last season with a winning time of 23mins 46secs, an average speed of over 25mph, startling children and animals along the route plus some riders as he flew past them. Peter Martin showed just how much winter training he has been doing by coming second with a time of 24mins 46secs, an unbelievable 2 minutes faster than his time last year. Michael Holland was third with 25mins 3secs followed closely by Robbie Bryson and Dane Dunlop both on 25mins 5secs.

This year the club has introduced a Handicapped Time Trial League. Each rider’s handicap is based on their best time last year at the McCaffrey’s Cross 10 mile TT. This league will reward the riders with the most improvement from last year. Allowing for the handicaps the top three riders on the night were:

1. Willie Dunlop
2. Peter Martin
3. Neil Armstrong

A big thanks on the night to the usual marshals and to Nigel Armstrong who sacrificed his own return to do the timing. He also lent his shoes and pedals to one rider. He had been keen to try out his new top quality wheelset, which he got on the cheap, but that will have to wait till the next event. As Nigel selflessly put it “Ask not what your club can do for you, but what you can do for your club.”

There were quite a few new faces at the event with some very respectable times. Apologies to Derek Holland, over a timing mistake on the night, his correct time was a much more pleasing result. We hope to see you all again at future events.

Our next event is a 24 mile road race on Wednesday 18th April at 7:00pm assembling at the cycling Mecca that is “The Three Ways Inn”. Another upcoming event is the “Four Counties Challenge” touring event on Sunday 22nd April which starts from Fivemiletown Golf Club at 10:00am. There are two options of 100km or 150km routes. We are asking for £10 per person( £7 entrance plus £3 donation for the Special Olympics Team).
