Boylan Tops At Lough Navar

Hill Climb 4 on Sunday 1st October 2006

Twenty-four hours later, nine of the Club Championship contenders turned up at The Forum to ride out to the Blaney-Lough Navar hill climb event. On the previous night, two of these contenders had been fueling up for the hill climb at a licensed establishment. Sense is not a commodity usually associated with cycling, people out in all weathers abusing themselves, but even among cyclists these two would be regarded as having half wit or less. Ray Dunlop claimed that he could ride a mountain bike on the hill climb and beat Raymond Pauley and, of course, money was involved in the challenge.

The riders started at one minute intervals from the disused filling station at Blaney heading off left towards Lough Navar view point. The six-mile course has about four miles of time trial followed by two miles of hills. It is one of the toughest events of the year with some very steep climbs towards the finish.

Kenny Boylan showed no sign of fatigue from his previous day's exertions and won in a record time of 22 minutes and 41 seconds. Robbie Bryson was next with a time of 25 minutes and one second, amazingly achieved on a mountain bike. Dane Dunlop showed that he was no slouch on the hills either with third place just nine seconds slower than Robbie. The wager went the way of Ray Dunlop; all he has to do now is get the money off Raymond Pauley.
