'Race Of Truth' Draws 16 Riders
Time Trial 4 on Wednesday 30th August 2006
On Wednesday, 30th August, the Lakeland Cycle Club held its fourth time trial of the year - a ten-mile event at McCaffrey's Cross, Tempo. Fifteen men and one woman gathered in the rain for their 'Race of Truth'. The rain had eased as the riders set off at one minute intervals, novices starting first, through to the elite starting last.
On the night, Ray Dunlop was first, continuing his fantastic form with a time of 22 minutes and 21 seconds. This is an average speed of just under 27mph for the ten-mile course, quite possibly breaking the speed limit through Clabby.
Kenny Boylan was a close second and Michael Holland of Crannog Ireland Club third. Michael was not happy with his performance but 23 minutes and 38 seconds is a time most can only dream about.
Other notable performances were Fergus McGirr of Fintona CC and our own Dane Dunlop. Dane's warm-up on a stationary trainer at the roadside obviously working!
Raymond Pauley and Peter Martin tied for times on this occasion. Peter beating his previous best time by two seconds. Questions were asked about Pauley's performance.
He claimed that he had been drinking brandy and that this had caused a natural increase in his level of testosterone. Legal action could follow and he may have his position stripped – but no-one wants to see him stripped!
Neil Armstrong made his first appearance since a career-threatening accident and showed continued improvement to justify claims that he is one to watch in the future.
However, this was one of the rare occasions when he was beaten by fellow debutant, Robert Wilson. Before the race, Rachel Withers could be heard in dispute with Fintona team mechanics over bike selection for the event, which possibly contributed to her below-par performance.
McCaffrey's Cross ten-mile time trial is an event that featured at the start and again now, near the end of the season. As such, it is good measure for the newer club members of their progress through the season and for 'old hands' to see how much they have left in the tank for the last few races at the end of a very tough and successful season for the Lakeland Cycle Club.
A special note of thanks to the WAGS, without whom the club events could not happen.
