Tommy Takes Second Win In The Saddle

Road Race 3 on Wednesday 7th June 2006

Fintona cyclist Tommy Peoples took a second win of the Lakeland road race series.

Peoples, a horse instructor and jockey at Enniskillen agriculture college, used a lot of tactical skill when he made a late surge of attack from the main group of cyclists passing a well placed John McManus for the line.

McManus missed out on what would have been a well deserved race win, having competed regularly at races since the start of February.

The race started off at the Three Way Inn Enniskillen, and followed the 37mile loop around Belcoo, Florencecourt, Five Points towards Gortatole and back for a finish at Rossory Church.

There was a slight mix-up at the intersection of the Five Points as the group took the wrong road.

Sitting at the back of the group Raymond Pauley and John McManus realizing the mistake, made a go for it, and pulled out seven minutes advantage between the Five Points and Gortatole, while the bunch decided what was the right route.

To make amends for the mistake, Raymond Dunlop, and Fintona cyclists Fergus McGirr surged the pack along to catch Pauley and McManus along the Belcoo/Enniskillen road.

When it came to the bunch sprint after all the riders had come together, it was McManus who made a particular strong effort for the line, only for Tommy Peoples to come out from the group in a well timed sprint win.

In the forthcoming interclub race at Cookstown, the Lakelalnd Club will want to make the use of McManus's strong sprint in their bid to win the interclub competition.

The Lakeland club are at present leading this competition by 30 points from the East Tyrone club.
