Bryson Leads-In Club Mates

Inter-Club 2 (Omagh) on Tuesday 23rd May 2006

Lakeland Cycle Club won round 2 of the Inter club Road race league this week in great style with the first five riders across the line all from the club. A remarkable result in a 30 mile race which was held in Omagh and took in the tough climb up the Gortin Glens.

Lakeland Club put out a very strong team of 12 riders with a race plan to try and catch the league leaders East Tyrone. With strong climbers in the club such as Robbie Bryson, Kenny Boylan, and Raymond Dunlop the hilly route was certainly going to suit them. As the race approached the last 10 miles and the town of Gortin all the groups of riders came together for the final climb up the Gortin Glens. The race quickly turned from a large group of 50 riders to a single line up the mountain lead by Stephen Coyle, Raymond Dunlop and Mark Mc Girr. Needing to get six riders across the line Boylan and Bryson did all they could to help their team mates up the mountain without too many riders from other clubs. Bryson led a ten man break away group over the top containing 5 Lakeland riders and two from East Tyrone, and 1 each from Omagh and Emyvale.

On the final approach to Omagh, East Tyrone riders were leading out the group to the line, but were quickly chased down by the five Lakeland riders. In the final sprint Robbie Bryson lead home his club mates to take victory, with Kenny Boylan in 2nd, Stephen Coyle in 3rd, Raymond Dunlop 4th, and Mark Mc Girr in 5th.

On the night it was an excellent result for the club with all 12 riders from the club finishing well up the results and helping secure the overall lead in the Inter Club league for the Lakeland Club.

The club was also well represented at an open race in Emyvale at the weekend with a strong team of eight riders taking part in their respective races.

In the junior and veterans race Kenny Boylan's fine solo effort was enough to earn him 2nd place in the race which saw all the top riders in the country compete, Stephen Coyle took 4th place after spending most of the race in a 4 man break away group which only got caught 15 miles from the finish. Peter Martin, Kenny Dunlop, and Wesley Foster all finished in the main group in the same race while Raymond Dunlop finished 10th overall in the 3rd cat race along with John Mc Manus and Mark Mc Girr in the bunch.
