Road Race 3

All the way win for Robbie

On Wednesday, April, Lakeland CC’s Road Race Three just about took place as rain and fading light threatened to cancel the event.

Thankfully there was a woman on hand to sort the matter out, Geraldine Lyons, race commissaire and director, came up with the compromise of a shorter two lap mass start race. This kept everyone happy and saved riders from having a wasted journey. The race was now two laps of the Brockagh Bridge/Gortatole/Florencecourt circuit and it was to prove to be a decision and race for Robbie Bryson .

Right from the start, the ‘pocket rocket’ Bryson broke free of the field of 19 riders. He maintained over a 30 second gap on the peloton for the rest of the race to the downhill finish at Brockagh Bridge. The second place, ‘boiling’ Boylan, created a 10 second gap on the last lap from the peloton.

With the exception of the first two the rest of the riders remained together for the bunch sprint. The Omagh club duo of Eugene Power and Paul McAleer provided the lead in the bunch sprint with Lakelanders, Kenny Donnell and Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Carson edging out the competition of Willie Dunlop and Mark Kavanagh-dish to complete the top six places.

The increased competitiveness of cycling in Fermanagh was reflected in the close sprint finish, with veteran Belcoo cyclist, Tom White, and 14-year-old, Lloyd Seaman, both finishing well up in the bunch. Thanks as always to the marshals, on a difficult night, for organising a safe race.
