St. Patrick's Time Trial

Leading contenders line up for opener

A large number of competiors started the St Patrick"s Day 10 mile time trial just past on Tuesday just outside Maguiresbridge and headed to Tempo before returning to Maguiresbridge. Indeed, the level of competition promises to fierce this year with a number of cyclists already showing some good form.

Among the leading contenders, is former two time Ulster Veteran Road Champion, Kenny Boylan, following his fine fifth place in the John Haldane 'B' Race in the Mourne Mountains on Sunday, March 8. Not to be out done, and gaining open category points is Club Secretary, John McManus, who was a major threat in the recent Phoenix Grand Prix, and due to his pace setting in the Phoenix GP 'B' race, he managed a top 12 place.

Third in the 2008 All Ireland Hill-Climb, was Dane Dunlop and now a first year senior competitor, he is likely to be the most dangerous competitor to Kenny Boylan during the 2009 season.

Other likely riders to be at the top this season include Raymond Dunlop who is now in his late 20s and has had an up and down career in the Lakeland Cycle Club. The one notable achievement for Raymond is that he became the first Lakeland member to become the Club"s 1st Category rider. For a number of years, Dunlop was a second Category competitor and his first major win was his victory in the Ras Dunn na Gall and here he was upgraded to his new category.

Always in the thick of action, Dunlop has claimed top three places in the Lakeland Club leagues and with his vast knowledge and experience, it is sure that he will help his cousin Dane to top the Club"s various leagues.

Elsewhere, Peter Martin is new into the club within the last five years and has featured well in the road race league events but he does not consider himself as a time trialist. Over the last couple of years, Martin has worked with his group members in the races and when it comes to the finish line, his sprinting power comes to the fore. Paymond Pauley, who is a long time stalwart of the Club, is one of two sponsors of the Club. In recent years, Pauley has been and still is the figure-head of the club being its current chairman.

Over the years, he has won many events within the club league and also ventures away from home, maybe leaving his wife behind to try his skill at the open racing scene. While racing in the open races, he also has learned new skills and this guy is worth watching during the coming season.

The Lakeland Club league season starts proper on Wednesday, April 1 at the Five Points for a 10 mile time trial which is considered the Trial of Truth. Prior to the first event there will be a Five County 150km tour starting from the Clogher Valley Golf Club at 10am. Further details of this event will be forthcoming next week.
