Cycling Season Gets Started
A fine Monday morning saw almost 20 riders out for the first time trial of the season. First off was James McAleer (U16 Fintona CC) in his debut competitive event. Times recorded for this event were very good for the early season and some surprises were in store, notably Frankie Flynn taking 21 seconds out of Joe Cleary. This could be down to Frankie taking the stabilisers off his new bike or some hard training over the winter months. Other notable times were that of Hugh McCann (Omagh CC) and Declan McGirr (Fintona CC) which proves that winter training counts.
Some close battles are pending when you see how only six seconds separated Michael Gallen (Omagh CC) in 2nd place and Kenny Boylan (Lakeland) who won the event for the first time in a couple of years with a time of just 24 minutes and 15 seconds over the 10-mile course. Speaking after the race Kenny said "I am surprised by how well I went over the course and did not expect to beat the likes of Mark Kavanagh and Michael Gallen this early in the season, but I guess I will be a marked man for the rest of the year after this win".
The season kicks off proper on Wednesday 10th April at 7pm at the Three Way Inn, Enniskillen with a short 5-mile Time Trial. This will see a lot of the club members back from their annual training camp in Majorca.
Anyone interested in cycling but not competing is welcome to come along any race night for a tour or part tour of the race course.
