Lakeland riders crash out in Cookstown

The third Interclub race this year took place on Thursday, June 12 and the 25 mile race at Cookstown was organised by the East Tyrone Cycle Club.

With a depleted team in the ‘A’ race, Lakeland struggled with Omagh Wheelers dominating, Robbie Bryson being our best placed finisher in the top ten with Kenny Boylan coming in with the main bunch.

The ‘B’ race ended in disaster with a very bad crash near the finish where the road narrowed just as the peloton had started to sprint for the line. Alan Magee was the worst of the Lakeland CC casualties with bad cuts and bruises.

One Omagh rider had to be brought to hospital by ambulance. Roger Monaghan managed to emerge from the group as the crash happened and didn’t look back until he had crossed the line to take first place in the ‘B’ race. Gerry Murphy was ahead of the peloton as they approached the finish but was hit from behind in the crash. With his back wheel buckled he thought quickly and threw the bike over his shoulder and ran over the line to gain valuable points for Lakeland CC in the Interclub League.

It was a bad night for Lakeland CC but thankfully Alan Magee is on the road to recovery and will be back on two wheels before long.
