McCorry Gets First Win

On Wednesday last, Road Race three in the Lakeland CC calendar took place. The 26 mile race started at Silverhill travelled out the Derrygonnelly road a few miles before turning left for Boho. It then came down the “Devil’s S’s” and came out onto the Sligo road where it turned left back towards Enniskillen and turned left again at Ashwoods to finish at Rossorry church. The weather cleared up just in time for the race and there was a good turnout for the event.

The field was split into three groups as usual but on this occasion there were only two riders in the scratch group, Kenny Boylan and Dane Dunlop. The front group worked well together and kept a good advantage over the middle group. A new rider, Paul McCorry made a break from the front group only to have to sit up and get caught at the turn at Ashwoods. Shortly after the Devil’s S’s descent Kenny Boylan was out of the race with a puncture which left Dane with all the work to do to catch the middle group which he did by Ashwoods.

On the run in to Rossorry, the front group were not going to be caught so they had to battle amongst themselves for the final top places. Shortly before the small rise to the finish, Paul McCorry again made the break and managed to hold off the group to take his first win. Keith Johnston finished in second place, in his last club event possibly this year, as he leaves to go to Dundee University to study Engineering and Cycling Technology. Kenny Donnell finished in third place as he starts to come into form after badly disrupted winter training.

Thanks to all the race marshals. No A to Z maps were required by the marshals for the event, unlike last week’s time trial at Lisbellaw. The Lisbellaw A to Z map book is a major undertaking and is still at the publishing stage but a copy has been reserved for Dorinda.
